In addition to sports, Mark is also an avid music lover. About his love of music:

“Music touches and inspires me. I already played ‘Rocking in the Freeworld’ by Neill Young once in Vancouver at the Holland Heineken House after getting my medal.

In particular, banging, vicious guitar rock appeals to me. I taught myself to play guitar a bit when I was forced to bivouac at home because I was felled by Pfeiffer’s disease for a winter.

The ideal outlet

Music is the ideal outlet, just like sports. But sports for me is directly linked to performance drive, something I can totally leave out with music.

Performance on the ice or off is also not separate from emotions such as fear, uncertainty, guts, pain, passion. Bands like: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica, Tool, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Deftones are among my favorites. At home on the couch or before competitions and during training sessions, I allow myself to be uplifted or soothed by the sounds and lyrics of musicians.

The few things in life that can stir you to the core, make you dance, cry, laugh or jump on the couch are for me (besides my family and friends) to really music and sports.”
